Broken Promises - The Ukrainian ongoing conflict
On February 24, 2022, the military offensive of the Russian army invaded Ukrainian territory after months of diplomatic tensions.
One of the reasons presented by the Russian government is linked to NATO's eastward expansion after the end of the Cold War.
By leveraging on this argument, the Russian government does not believe that it has violated the historic Budapest memorandum, the agreement signed in 1994 by which Ukraine agreed to renounce its nuclear weapons and hand them over to neighboring Russia obtaining in exchange the guarantees for its security, independence and territorial integrity.
The conflict has deep roots, stemming from broken dialogues over time between Western forces and the young Russia, that inherited political and military power from the Soviet Union.
Broken promises on both sides that eventually led to the bombing of Kyiv.
The signs were clear, especially since after the beginning Russian-Ukraininan crisis of 2014, that was terribly understimated by the European Union and the US.
Since the outbreak of the conflict, we have witnessed the biggest refugee crisis in Europe since the WWII and Donbass has once again become a great chessboard for a war that is being fought without any clear end in sight.

Daily attack from the Russian artillery are forcing the population to move out from the city or live in subway stations. Several fires are putting in danger the few who are still living in their homes. |

Several hundreds of civilians today at the railway station of Pokrovsk are leaving Donbass area. Most of them are going to be brought in Dnipro. Most of the inhabitants are from Bakhmut, Kramatorsk and Kostyantynivka. Since a week the Ukrainian government called for a mandatory evacuation of Donetsk region, but are thousands the civilians who are remaining in their cities despite the danger of the conflict. |

Most of them they are planning to go to the western border of the country or at least to L’viv. The railroad is the safest way to move from Kiev, now isolated partially with the rest of the country. |

The city of Shevchenkove was de-occupied from the 7th of September, after mostly 6 months of occupation. Several vans come from the closest villages, in particular from the city of Kupjansk where the area is heavily bombed by the Russian artillery. Valeria with her grandchild Alice arrived in Shevchenkove. According to her the Russians during the occupation threated her to take Alice if she was not going to the school based on Russian culture. |
